The Fig Island Shell Rings of South Carolina are dated from 4,200 to 3,800 years ago and were constructed during the late archaic period. No one knows exactly why they were built. This video gives a birds eye look at these ancient structures.
The fog was very thick as I waited at the landing for the Division of Natural Resources boat to ferry me to the island. Thankfully it lifted as we made our way through the salt marshes.An ancient live-oak tree stands as a silent sentinel near the waters edge,To protect preserve this wonderful place, Fig Island is strictly off-limits. Fig Island-2 reveals itself to be hexangluar when seen from above.Looking across Fig Island-2 it is easy to imagine people once living here.Trees uprooted in a storm reveal ancient pottery. This precious place and the story it holds of the first Americans is in danger of being lost to erosion or looters.
